Why 2016 Should Be About So Much More Than Your Career

Though I just wrote to everyone earlier this week, I’m sneaking in one more “encore” article for this year! Forgive me, but I simply can’t resist the sentiment of New Years. What a wonderful opportunity we have in our hands to release the old energies of the past year and welcome the new energy of 2016. But like anything else, it only carries the meaning and potential that you give it.

As you move into the new year, what do you want to think, feel, do or be differently this year? Are your thoughts, feelings and actions in line with what you desire? It’s so important to take stock of where we’ve been in order to recognize progress when it happens. As you close out 2015, think about the events of the past year. And I don’t just mean the events that occurred around you, but the events that occurred inside of you. What was I successful at? What was I not successful at? What areas of my life grew and expanded? What did I hold onto? What should I let go of?

No matter what your goals are for the next year, whether you want a new job, better health or healing in your relationships, the process of change is always the same. You have to transform your inner thoughts and beliefs in order to transform a situation. Every single thought you have is doing one of two things: it’s either moving you closer to your goals, or it’s protecting the status quo. I want to challenge you to really dig deep and ask yourself this question: Are my thoughts, feelings, actions and expectations aligned to what I want, or am I standing in my own way? You might tell yourself that you need a better job, or a higher salary, but deep down you don’t really believe it’s “realistic.” This is an example of a self-defeating belief that will do a great job of keeping you right where you're at.

For me, the best part of New Years is the element of renewal. What emotional deadweight have you  been carrying around that you will refuse to take with you into 2016? We all have it. Of course, you know you don’t ever need to wait for January 1st to experience the bliss of emotional release and renewal. You can feel that anytime you want. As I said, it’s the events that occur inside of you that matter. And your life and current circumstances are nothing more than a physical manifestation of what is inside of you.

From my family to yours, I wish you a peaceful and joyful year in 2016. Thank you for being a part of WorkSmart Career Counseling!
