I go through the same cycle with clients every year. November approaches and they get caught up with the holidays. They assume that no one is hiring.....and they wait. They wait and tell themselves that they're going to "go hard" in January with their job search.

Is this you?

Here's what people don't think about: the average job search takes several months, and that does not include preparation for a job search, such as updating your resume and LinkedIn.

Right now (when things are quiet and half of the office is on a holiday vacation) is THE BEST TIME to start preparing for your search. That way, when January comes you won't lose time like everyone else.

Here are three reasons why you should NOT postpone your search:

  1. Less competition. Even though there are fewer opportunities, there are also fewer applicants applying. Being one of the first to apply does help you to stand out. Take advantage of this and continue applying through the third quarter. Some employers may use this time to do preliminary recruiting for positions that will materialize in 2018. Applying now will make you one of the first applicants!
  2. End of the year budgets. Many organizations do continue to hire at the end of the year to use up any remaining budget money that their department may have. Also, if the company wasn't successful at filling a role earlier in the year, they may continue recruiting through the holidays.
  3. Holidays=networking opportunities. The holidays are a very social time of year and that means networking opportunities. See every holiday party that you go to as an opportunity to make new contacts and continue to follow up and build those relationships into 2018.

While you don't have to put in full-time hours job searching, it's worthwhile to keep your resume up to date and ready if you do see opportunities. I know it's tempting to procrastinate but trust me, you'll be glad you didn't.

Need another reason not to wait? My coaching schedule fills up VERY quickly in January. To avoid a longer turnaround time on your resume, contact me to get on my schedule. You'll be a step or two ahead of everyone else.
